What does it take to be a strong negotiator? I think it takes listening skills, understanding, market knowledge, confidence, and a commitment to the needs and goals of my clients.
I always try to see the big picture and get a clear understanding of what all parties to the transaction hope to accomplish.
Another thing is trust! In order for me to be effective, it is paramount that everyone believes that I am speaking the truth.
It is important to understand that negotiations are not always about price. It is certainly near or at the top of the list for most parties but there are lots of other things that can be just as important, or more. By identifying what is most important to each person, I can often help them attain that goal and create a situation where everyone feels like a winner.
